Fractures & trauma
A fall in the bathroom, a slip on the stairs, a wrist put out to break a fall. Most of the outcome is decided in the first two days.
Already in a cast or a plaster elsewhere and unsure about it? Send us the X-rays.
Most fractures heal well in a cast. Where the bone is in an acceptable position, or can be put there and held, a cast gives the same result as an operation without the anaesthetic, the scar or the infection risk. We operate only when the fracture, or your life, needs it.

An eighty-year-old who breaks a hip is not in danger from the fracture. She is in danger from lying in bed with it. Operating within forty-eight hours saves lives.
Our centres admit hip fractures on the day they present, work the medical clearance in parallel rather than in sequence, and aim to have the patient sitting out of bed the morning after surgery.

Decided on where the break is, how displaced it is, and how mobile the patient was before the fall — not on age alone.

Wrists, shoulders, ankles and hips make up most of what comes through the door. Fractures around a replacement are the least forgiving, and the reason they belong in a centre that does arthroplasty every week.

When a bone breaks from a simple fall, there is usually a reason. We investigate the cause, find it, and recommend the right treatment so that it does not happen again.
We take the fractures a specialist orthopaedic centre does well. We are not a receiving centre for high-speed road accidents or for anyone with a head, chest or abdominal injury, and sending such a patient here costs them time they cannot spare.
If you are unsure which you are looking at, call us. A surgeon will tell you where to go, including when that is somewhere other than here.

Once such a patient is stable, we are glad to take on the orthopaedic reconstruction that follows.
Nobody budgets for a fracture. Cashless with every major insurer, and with the corporate health schemes we are empanelled with — for an emergency admission the pre-authorisation is filed while the patient is being prepared, not after, and surgery is not held up waiting for it.
You get a written estimate before consent, and a named coordinator who deals with the insurer so the family does not have to.

Send us the X-rays taken at the time and any since. A surgeon will tell you whether the position is holding, whether the cast is doing its job, and whether anything needs to change — including when the answer is that it is all going as it should.

A fracture that needs surgery needs it within two days, so the phone is faster than a form. Use the form for reviews, second opinions and fractures already being treated.
